Having toured and recorded with the likes of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai,, Stu Hamm’s resumé is the stuff of
dreams. Right from the start, he has made a name for himself as someone who can keep up with the best and
keep going. Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana, Hamm grew up in Champaign, Illinois, where he studied the bass and piano. At the same time, he was actively playing in his high school band and was picked for the Illinois All-State Band. After high school, Stu attended the prestigious Berklee School of Music. Studying at Berklee, he met Steve Vai and ended up going on the road with Vai’s friend, Joe Satriani as a touring bass player. Touring with Satriani established him among his peers as a serious player and eventually Stu ended up playing on Steve Vai solo albums like Flexible and Passion and Warfare. Click here and listen to a song by Stu Hamm from The Urge album.

Stu’s playing is uniquely unconventional displaying a profound mastery of many different genres like rock, fusion, country as well as classical music. Not just as a player but as a composer as well. His technique incorporates advanced playing styles like slapping, two-handed tapping and a knack for making his bass guitar sound like anything but a bass. Over the years. Stu has recorded with instrumental masters such as Frank Gambale, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Richie Kotzen among myriad others.

He’s also the only person in the world to have won Guitar Player Magazine’s readers poll for Best Rock Bassist AND Best Jazz Bassist in the same year. And he has done it twice! From 2011-2014, he was the Director of Bass Programs at the renowned Musician’s Institute. For over two decades, Stu has traveled the world as one of the foremost bass clinicians, inspiring countless bass players around the globe.
